South Korea accepts Ethiopian as refugee citizen

While South Korea had signed the U.N. Refugee Convention in 1994, it has accepted only 175 refugees since then. Last week, an Ethiopian became the first such refugee to gain South Korean citizenship.

While South Korea has accepted thousands of North Korean refugees, North Koreans are accepted differently as they are automatically given citizenship upon receiving refugee status.
