USPS proposes to cut Saturday delivery

leave a comment »

The U.S. Postal Service may cut mail delivery on Saturdays sometime in the beginning of 2011. Due to the rise of email, FedEx, and decreased income, the USPS needs to cut costs and cutting delivery on Saturdays seems to be the least destructive since it is the lightest mail day and one third of all U.S. businesses are closed anyways. This cut would save over $3 billion annually.

However, under the proposed plan, Express Mail would not be affected and Post Offices that are already open on Saturdays will remain open. Congress would need to approve for the cut in delivery to be in effect, and upon congressional approval, the USPS must give customers a 6-month notice.
