Info on North Korean operating system, Red Star

leave a comment »

A Russian blogger studying in North Korea bought a copy of Red Star, a computer operating system home-brewed by the N. Korean government, and posted information about it on the internet.

Apparently, the Linux-based system is highly restrictive and is geared towards monitoring user activity. However, it does run Mozilla Firefox and has versions of Microsoft Office’s programs. The software runs only in Korean and uses the North Korean calendar system that is based on the birth of Kim Il Sung (2010 is the year 99)

Most people in North Korea don’t have computers, nor the $5 it cost to by Red Star off the street. But it is interesting to see that they REALLY don’t like the outside word.
