Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens to retire

leave a comment »

Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens has announced today that he will retire by the end of the year. He announced his retirement via letter to the White House this morning.

Justice Stevens has served 35 years since the Carter Administration and will turn 90 this month.

This leaves another seat for President Obama to fill. Last year, he nominated Justice Sonia Sotomayor to the country’s highest bench.

U.S. Supreme Court Justices serve life terms, unless they choose to resign beforehand. They are hand-picked by sitting presidents and must be approved by the Senate.
